A calm, factual index of how large modern games really are

Gerleu is an editorial information service based in Berlin. We explain, in plain language, how many gigabytes a large release tends to occupy, which parts of a title consume that room, and how built-in system tools can lower a storage footprint. We also describe how gaming deals move across authorized retailers and how cloud streaming performs in everyday conditions.

What this portal covers

The first theme is scale. A modern open-world release can consume well over a hundred gigabytes once high-resolution textures, several audio languages, pre-rendered cutscenes and cached shader data are counted together. Our size index gathers representative figures for common categories and explains why the number on the store page is rarely the number you end up with on disk. Understanding that gap is the starting point for any sensible storage plan.

The second theme is reduction. There is a widespread belief that a big title simply cannot be made smaller. In practice, most of the growth comes from assets that are duplicated for speed, from uncompressed audio tracks, and from packs that a given player may never open. Built-in system tools — the compressors and storage managers that ship with the operating system — can reclaim meaningful room, and our guides walk through them step by step for Windows, for macOS and for Linux.

The third theme is access. Cloud streaming shifts the heavy lifting to a remote machine and sends only a video signal to the screen. That model changes the hardware question entirely, but it introduces its own variables: distance to a regional data centre, connection stability, and the way a client buffers frames. We describe each factor without hype and note where the experience is still limited.

The fourth theme is price. Games are sold at many different price points over their lifetime, and legitimate deals arise constantly at authorized retailers. We maintain a watch list, a seasonal calendar and a short directory that explains how to recognise a licensed storefront.

How we describe games

We deliberately avoid naming specific products, publishers or storefronts. Instead we group titles by broad genre and by the technical choices that drive their size. That keeps the discussion useful for years rather than for a single release window, and it keeps our guidance neutral. When we say “a modern open-world release”, we mean a title with a large continuous map, a long campaign and a generous set of art assets. When we say “a competitive shooter”, we mean a title built around repeatable matches and frequent content updates.

What we do not do

Information only. Gerleu never offers anything to obtain, fetch or set up. We do not distribute content, we do not host files, and we do not point readers toward unofficial sources. Every guide on this site describes tools that already ship with an operating system, and every deal reference points to an authorized retailer.

Our editorial team publishes analysis, definitions and practical methods. Anything that involves a purchase occurs between the reader and a licensed seller, under that seller’s own terms. We simply try to make the surrounding landscape easier to read.

Where the numbers come from

Storage figures in our index are indicative. They describe the size a title may reach once the base data, the optional high-resolution asset packs and a reasonable set of updates are present. Actual values shift with patch level, language selection and the options a player enables. Treat every figure here as a planning estimate rather than a promise, and always confirm the current requirement with the source that matters to you.
